How to train your brain – concepts to build happiness and wellbeing

A fundamental thinking capability and the key to lifetime happiness is dependent upon how we use our brain to differentiate the present from the past and future. This is a concept that was introduced to me by Dan Sullivan from Strategic Coach, and it has had a profound impact on my life.

One of the ways that we can increase and build positive wellbeing, our confidence, feelings of success and self-esteem is to measure our progress backwards and look at where we have come from in comparison to where we are now.

Happiness is a process of measurement and is based on how we use our brain to acknowledge our achievements and progress. We live on this hedonic treadmill – what used to make us happy doesn’t make us happy any longer. As human beings, we are always striving to have more and to be more in all areas of our life. What goals have you had that when you achieve them, you find something else bigger and better to do? We want more and we don’t ever seem to be satisfied. That is because our future is always moving and growing in size. It gets bigger the closer we move toward it.

Here is the life-changing lesson: The only person we can realistically compare ourselves to is the person we were yesterday. If we want to build our wellbeing, we need to arm ourselves with a set of tools and strategies that allow us to look at where we have come from in comparison to where we are today so that we build our confidence and wellbeing. This is one way for increasing our positivity ratio and our overall life satisfaction and happiness.

Start training your brain by measuring your progress backwards from where you were yesterday. Look back each day and ask yourself, what did I achieve? What did I get done? What little steps did I take that are leading me in the direction of my goal? Was it calling a difficult client or taking positive steps toward your weight loss goal? If you are recovering from an illness or injury, what little, tiny, baby steps did you take yesterday that is leading you toward recovery – mentally or physically? Whatever you did, not matter how small, write it down and keep track of it.

The key to finding happiness and wellbeing is to stay focused on what you want to achieve, the end goal and measure and track your progress in relation to that goal backward. When we do this, all of our progress is seen as success because we are actually moving forward.  This is how we build self-esteem and confidence and give ourselves the biggest opportunity of feeling good about ourselves.
